Instagram Testing Feature: Turn Off DM Read Receipts

Instagram is finally taking a leap forward by testing a highly anticipated feature that allows users to turn off read receipts for their direct messages (DMs). This long-awaited feature promises to give users greater control over their online interactions, making conversations more discreet and less pressured.

The Announcement:

Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri, prominent figures behind Instagram, unveiled this exciting development through their respective broadcast channels. Acknowledging the clamor from Instagram's vast user base, Mosseri stated, "We heard your feedback and have started testing a new feature that lets you turn read receipts off in your DMs. Soon, people will be able to choose when to let others see when they've read their messages."

How It Works:

In a move toward transparency, Instagram's head shared a screenshot of the Privacy & Safety menu for direct messages, where the feature can be found. To access this menu, users simply need to tap on the name of the profile within a chat. Those who are part of the testing phase will see a toggle under the "Who can see your activity" section, allowing them to turn off read receipts.

This new capability ensures that even if you've read a message, the sender won't be alerted with the familiar "seen" label beneath the message, relieving users of the sometimes onerous obligation to respond immediately.

The Wait is Over:

While Instagram's introduction of this feature might seem overdue, it's essential to note that it is a promising step forward. Interestingly, Instagram's parent company, Meta, had already implemented a similar function within its messaging app, WhatsApp, back in 2014.
